Thanks for sharing your input. When we originally tested 1040.com, we couldn’t find anywhere to upload a W-2. However, as of today, we do see the option is available, and took a screenshot and updated our review.

For the self-employment issue, we still don’t find it easy to use. The software walks users through the depreciation segment but does little to explain what is happening or how to complete it properly.

At the end of the day, we believe that other tax software products offer a similar or better experience at a lower price point. You do offer some differentiation in interesting areas – like multiple states at a flat price point, but this is very niche for the vast majority of DIY tax-filers.

We look forward to the continued improvements of 1040.com and will update as you release new features. Hopefully next year you can make our Best Tax Software list in one of our main categories.

We appreciate all feedback and reviews on our product and use them to fuel our development efforts.

We’d like to point out a few misstatements in your overview with the goal of providing accurate information for your readers.

W-2 Import: Our automatic W-2 import for millions of taxpayers is not addressed in your review. While it is not a “snap and save” feature, it does automatically import any W-2s that our partners have made accessible (such as ADP)—users only need to enter their Employer Identification Number and if there is a match, we import it. It’s that simple and there’s no extra charge. You could point out the limitation that not every W2 can be imported since not every W2 is in this large database, but to say that we have no import is inaccurate.

White-Labeled Software: While you may see other products in the market that have white-labeled our software, we are the original. 1040.com is not a white-labeled platform.

Depreciation in the Self-Employment Walkthrough: Our self-employment questionnaire does, in fact, prompt for depreciation.

Self-Employment Filing: We do include self-employment in our walkthrough, and your assertion that we do not is unfortunate—our price for self-employment filers is radical for DIY taxes, and we have the reviews to show that the walkthrough is simple and effective. Take Jake’s review, for instance:
“Easy and straightforward. A solid resource for a small investment that feels reassuring when my
taxes were a tad more complicated than simple W-2 income (1099-NEC forms and inheritance).”

Investment and Real Estate: As with self-employment, we do include these in the walkthrough.

We appreciate you including us in your review lineup; however, we respectfully disagree and are disappointed with your hard stance against our product for freelancers and side-hustles. Many self-employed filers have relatively simple tax situations, and we handle them very well. We also have a reasonable fee compared to many other products in the market that substantially increase their fees for one simple 1099-NEC. We have tons of satisfied self-employed filers, which has us scratching our heads at your position, and to be honest, frustrated with your review.

We trust that, as someone who is providing advice to consumers and fair, objective reviews of all products, you place a high value on providing accurate information in your reviews. While we understand some of your statements are opinions, we hope you will update the inaccurate statements as soon as possible.

Thank you for your time.

We at 1040.com appreciate you taking the time to review and rate our service, though we would like to provide some counterpoints.

Our self-employed walkthrough is one of the best around, and we receive a lot of positive reviews from freelancers – especially because $25 for non-employee compensation blows most of our competition out of the water. If you have a side hustle with a handful of 1099-NECs, we believe we’re hands down a much better option than most others! That said, we’re always looking for ways to improve, and we’d appreciate any constructive feedback you have on our self-employed section.

Also, we’ve simplified rental income process in our walkthrough this year, so we hope you were able to check it out during the ‘Other Income’ section. Our team has put a lot of work in to optimize tax filing for people with rental income, and we’d love any pointers on how to keep making it even better.

Thanks for your thorough review, and we look forward to touching base again next year!

The 1040-NR is not supported by this company.
