TaxAct informed me that my returns were not eligible for e-filing. This has never happened to me before. So I printed and mailed my federal tax return before the April filing deadline (it’s now May). However, when I went to print my state tax return, Tax Act has a notice that the forms for filing are not available to print yet. So I cannot file yet. It is now May 19, which is four days after the tax filing deadline for my state. I check the online account regularly, but the forms are still not available. I prepared my return with plenty of time to file and already paid for my state taxes to be prepared– but they’re not done and I cannot print them. Can I get ahold of anyone to fix this? Nope! No email, no chat “after hours” (5 pm local).

Good to know this. The same thing is happening with TurboTax. Guess I won’t try here! Lol

The support team advice to enter manually, really? There is no proper error, no sample file that explain how the file format should look like. Sometime files have summary, total, sub total.

The help doc say what all columns it is expecting, but that too not working, they should show a template file.

They used to be cheap and good. But this year, for 2020 Returns, State and Federal E-File, $99 and for what? That is the bare minimum. Talking about eating up a big chunk of what I’ll get back on my returns. That is just insane!!!! I’ve had it with them. I got to the payment section and saw $99, and stopped right there, and decided to look around. So I knew what it was showing me for Fed and State Refund.

Then I went to FreeTaxUSA. I created an account. I was able to Import my last year’s 2019 Tax return forms in PDF from TaxAct, by selecting that and TaxAct. I print out copies every year as a backup, but I also save the PDF files every year in my Document area on my PC.

I Had to enter more info, basically, redo what I had done in TaxAct into FreeTaxUSA. But really wasn’t a big deal. In no time I was DONE. The Federal and State Return amounts were THE SAME. e-File for Federal was FREE, and I just had to pay for State which was a low $14.99 to file the CA state return. That was it!!

Now tell me, would you rather pay $99 or $15? I remember when TaxAct was a good deal. Now they’ve just become greedy!!!!

I have been with them over 7 or 8 years, but I think it is finally time to go. I have to start looking for an alternative earlier next year. $106 and I do the work. No thanks
